Utilizing collage, the manipulation of found images and text, alongside painting and drawing allows me to liberate myself from the traditional forms of the two mediums. Although collage may appear to give limits through the material’s previous subject matter, I am able to deconstruct these otherwise recognizable images through the use of a knife. The knife, like a brush or pencil, is my drawing utensil to create new and interesting forms. Appropriating the images into new spaces, but not completely stripping them of their original content, can allow for an even larger dialogue to be unearthed. Collage materials carry a lot of baggage and it’s the artist job to disguise them or use their history as a means of making their own creative statements carry. As I bring traditional material into the works—such as charcoal, oil pastel, and paint—I am able to further remove these images from their original context or better assimilate them into their new spaces.
